How I misappropriated $825,000 of church funds – Pastor confesses in court

During a hearing of the bankruptcy case of the Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church, the church’s pastor, Rev. Gregory Groover, admitted that the church had misused $825,000 of restricted endowment funds over a period of five years to meet expenses.
Groover testified all day in court during the hearing on Monday this week and the amount he declared was well in excess of the figure that church leaders shared during a previous hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Boston.

Apparently Charles Street AME Church owes almost $5 million in loans to One United Bank and the bank’s lawyer, Lawrence Edelman, questioned Groover about the negative cash flow figures shown on monthly financial statements of the church.  Edelman said that by spending the Lilly Endowment funds, which were earmarked for a residency program for pastors in training, the church had committed fr

However, Groover doesn’t agree with Edelman.  He admits that what the church did was wrong and they should not have misused the funds.  But he also stated that he is no criminal.
“I’m deeply sorry for that but I would not consider it a fraud,” Groover said.
According to Ross Martin, lawyer for Charles Street AME, the money had been used to pay back a large amount to the bank and to cover other expenses.  Last year, after One United bank threatened to auction off the church, Charles Street AME filed for bankruptcy protection.
New rules have been introduced within the church to make sure that they don’t land in any more hot water. One of which is a requirement stating that instead  of the pastor signing checks, it will now be done by two people.
According to Groover’s testimony the church has also taken other measures to try to get back on their feet, including the reduction of staff, frozen hiring and pay cuts.
Charles Street AME, as part of its restructuring plan, has offered to turn over a house in Milton, that is empty and in need of repairs, to the One United bank. The house was formerly used by pastors.

Dele Momodu: If I were President Jonathan

by Dele Momodu
DELE-MOMODU1
The first and most important was that I expected a man who comes from my kind of humble background to run a simple and less expensive government.
Fellow Nigerians, I had planned, and hoped, to escape from President Goodluck Jonathan’s unending brouhaha this week but that seems impossible for as long as our President and acolytes continue to titillate us with salacious news every week. My piece today was triggered by a few unrelated events. The first was a chance meeting I had with a distinguished media baron who spent over ten hours with me in Accra early this week. He had apparently read most of my articles and was determined to get me to take a closer look at President Jonathan’s efforts and achievements so far. He acknowledged, unlike most of this government’s apologists, that I had maintained a semblance of objectivity in my writings. He was particularly impressed that I had remained in the National Conscience Party, at a time most politicians would have jumped ship.
I was grateful for the kind sentiments expressed by him and thanked him as was expected of me. He believes we can’t write this Jonathan Administration off despite many daunting challenges. He said it was the collective responsibility of all and sundry to support the President in order to succeed. He could see the evidence of incredulity on my face but he did not give up on his conviction. I listened to him with rapt attention and responded occasionally.

I confessed that I did not see any redeeming grace for this trouble-prone government. My pessimism was not out of what I thought the President had done wrong but from what he has refused to do right. I do not know about other critics of President Jonathan, but God knows I bear no personal animosity against him. I will continue to try my best to support and encourage the President through constructive criticism, but unfortunately, his new-found supporters have never seen anything good in the critical appraisal of those who risked everything to get Jonathan where he is today when they were nowhere to be found. If they truly cared for the man’s well-being, they would have cultivated more friends than the enemies they’ve been amassing for him. And if they were very smart, as expected of close associates of Mr President, they would have differentiated genuine critics from those few who may have personal scores to settle. The astute leader appreciates well-founded criticism and is tolerant of even rabid ones because there is always something good that can be derived from even brutal character assassination.  But since they could not decipher that simple and straight-forward fact, they chose to lump the wheat with the chaff thereby making it difficult to bake an edifying cake out of their mess.
What were the things I expected him to do that he did not do? I shall endeavour to itemise and articulate a few of them. The first and most important was that I expected a man who comes from my kind of humble background to run a simple and less expensive government. That encapsulates most of my grouses against our present leader. Under Jonathan, I think governance has become over-bloated and unnecessarily ceremonial. We have succeeded in elevating frivolity into an art. Look around Abuja and even beyond, there is no sign of ostensible commitment to national rebirth and development. While the Emirates are investing their wealth in enduring monuments, we are frittering away our own like a people without vision and ambition. I’m rigid in my belief that there’s elegance in simplicity and that it removes nothing from us if we reflect austerity measures in our days of tribulations. I’ve studied the history of other nations that went through our kind of socio-political instability and economic woes. None of them ever recovered by spending what they did not have on luxury goods.
They sat back to reflect seriously and intensely on where and how they got things wrong and re-routed their journey from the road to perdition to that of prosperity.  Right now developed nations are engaged in severe austerity measures because of the economic crisis rocking the world but our current crop of leaders choose to bury their head in the sand like ostriches.
Why is it so difficult to accept that we are comatose and agree to administeran intensely painful treatment on our ailments? Rather than do this we continue to live in denial and wallow in deliberate stupidity as if there is no tomorrow.
Examples abound in Africa about countries that rebounded from perfidious and self-immolating crisis to a staggering economic growth and socio-political stability. We don’t have to travel far or look beyond our continent to see and seek examples of miraculous rehabilitation from the shadows of death. Angola, Rwanda, Malawi, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Botswana, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania and others are making effort to march forward. What unites them is the discipline to understand that there is no paean without pain and that no one makes omelette without breaking eggs. We can never drink the coconut water if we are unable to crack the nut. It appears like we expect our changes to occur by some esoteric magic without lifting a finger. But that will never happen because God has already endowed us with all we need to be the true giant of Africa.
Two, I expect President Jonathan to emulate the best practises from different places. As a scholar, he should be able to conduct research into how others got out of their own quagmire and learn from them. As they say, knowledge is power. There is nothing happening to us today that had not occurred elsewhere.
I repeat, that I expect a more aggressive way of tackling the issue of poor quality education and mass unemployment because no nation on earth can be great when majority of the youths lack basic and qualitative education and the employable ones lack commensurate jobs. We cannot fight crime in a land overflowing with hunger and ignorance. We cannot exterminate corruption when an average citizen cannot survive on his earnings and there is no credit system as buffer. We can never call ourselves developed or developing when our infrastructures have virtually collapsed almost beyond resuscitation and there seems to be no redemption in sight. We spend so much on over-inflated contracts but get little or nothing in return.
Three, instead of concentrating on his job, our President is allowing himself to be distracted by politicians who have nothing to lose. I would have expected President Jonathan to let his good work speak for him rather than engage the services of bullies who bark at every perceived and imaginary enemy of government. They fail to realise that critics exist everywhere including the most developed countries. Nothing illustrates the dangerous game our leaders are playing than the report I read in THISDAY, June 28, 2013. It was an acerbic response to Dr Muhammed Junaid’s purported attack on Mrs Patience Jonathan for her perceived role in the Rivers State crisis. It was signed by a Mr Timi Briggs on behalf of “League of Rivers Lawyers.”
If the release is a sign of, and dress rehearsal for, what is to come, then Nigeria is in a very serious trouble. It seems some people have already given up on the country and are merely waiting for the opportune time to kill the dream of “one nation, one God, under one Destiny.” I did not see what Dr Junaid said that would warrant such vituperations on behalf of the President’s wife.  According to Mr Briggs, Junaid has no business talking about Rivers politics: “when his region is on fire and its economy broken by activities of Boko Haram, Junaid is dumb and helpless…”
Mr Briggs was not yet done, as he vented his venomous tirade against Junaid in a manner suggesting preference for war over peace: “ If Junaid is looking for what to talk or work to do, the collapse of the Northern economy, rising unemployment, illiteracy and alarming insecurity under his nose are enough engagement rather than abusing Mrs Jonathan.”
My God, when and how did we degenerate to this level? If this is how we hope to secure a second term for our South-South brother, we are missing the road big time. Nobody, and I repeat, nobody can be President of Nigeria by the votes of his own people alone. As I explained to my concerned brother who spoke to me, our people need to wake up from this persecution complex. Our son, or brother, is President today by the grace of God. After God, people from other parts of Nigeria made it possible for him to get to where he is today.
President Olusegun Obasanjo was not an Ijaw man when he concocted the potion that threw up Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Most of those who demonstrated on the streets of Abuja in solidarity with Dr Jonathan when he was being oppressed by the Yar’Adua cabal were not from the Niger Delta. Many of those spitting fire and brimstone today did not utter a whimper.
Dr Jonathan has a good chance of returning to power in 2015, I’m sure. It won’t be on the basis of spectacular performance but because of the way Nigeria is configured. If he fails to make it, the reason would be attributable to the nonsense some people are mumbling all over the place like victims of acute delirium.
Many are boasting that we can break up Nigeria if Jonathan is not allowed to have a second term. Please, tell me the sense in the President of Nigeria downgrading to be President of the Ijaw nation. I’m yet to see a man Nigeria has blessed more than Goodluck Jonathan. I used to think President Olusegun Obasanjo had no rival until the arrival of President Jonathan on the scene. Since he joined politics around 1998, Dr Jonathan has been permanently in power at the highest levels. Why would he want some desperados to break up the country that gave him so much on a platter of gold? It does not make sense to me that someone that God has made a World Heavyweight Champion would seek a Belt in the Featherweight category.
If I were Ebele Jonathan, I will urgently surround myself with those who can think outside the box and roll up my sleeves to hit the ground running. To whom much is given, much is expected. We should stop beating these useless and unreasonable drums of war. We brought nothing to this world and we shall take nothing whenever we return to our father in heaven. What, therefore, is the essence of this hullabaloo? The best way to guarantee Jonathan’s second term ambition is to begin to work like a modern day President and not like some prehistoric demagogue.
And to those spreading the hate campaigns against innocent Nigerians from other parts, please cool temper. You must remember that most Nigerians don’t belong to any political party. They just want to live in peace and earn their daily bread. Why would you inflict maximum damage on people who are minding their business even while the looting goes on unabated?
It would be unfair and unfortunate to throw them into chaos they know nothing about. In doing so those who have dragged us to the precipice may find themselves falling off the edge and descending into a nightmare they never bargained for or one that that they can expect to wake from as the people vent their pent up frustration and anger on those who have destroyed their slumber.
President Goodluck Jonathan must rescue Nigeria from those determined to draw blood.
May God help us all.

Little monsters: Moscow teens decapitate homeless man, then play soccer with his head

Exported.;

Two Russian teens allegedly beheaded a homeless man then played soccer with his head. Identification of the dead man has been hampered after his head was taken away by a garbage truck.

Two drunk Russian teens chopped off a homeless man’s head, which they then used to play soccer, police said.
The pair allegedly used an ax, saw and knives to kill and decapitate the vagrant on a street in eastern Moscow “because they didn’t like the look of him.”

After kicking his head around, they dumped it in a garbage bin. His corpse was left dumped on the street.
Cops reportedly caught up with the suspects after following a trail of blood from his body to an apartment — where they found the weapons believed to have been used in the killing.
The home was also “covered” in blood, reports RIA Novosti.
The Moscow Investigative Committee is still looking into the case.
But the identification of the dead man has been hampered after his head was taken away by a garbage truck.
The teens could each face 15 years in prison if convicted of murder.

Better Sex? Drink This To Improve Your Sexual Performance

A nutritionist, Jummai Abdul, has recommended the consumption of cashew fruit juice for enhanced sexual activities, including energy boost in males and females during intercourse.
She said that the juice also helps in the prevention of heart diseases and stroke.
Ms. Abdul, a nutritionist at the Wuse General Hospital, made the recommendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.
“Cashew fruit contain fats that promote healthy hearts, and reduce high triglyceride level that is associated with increased risk of heart diseases.
“Excess calories are stored as triglycerides in the body. Triglycerides provide much of the energy for cell function,’’ she said.

The nutritionist noted that eating a handful of cashew nuts a day would provide enough essential minerals like manganese, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium for deficiency disease prevention. She also said that cashew fruits were rich in calcium that enhanced healthy muscles and bones in the body, including vitamin C which, she said, was a powerful remedy for colds.
“The cashew fruit juice is now popping up in herbal formulas designed to boost energy and sexual function; it also helps to promote normal sleep patterns in menopausal women.

“Cashew fruit has high copper content that is vital in energy production, greater flexibility in blood vessels, bones and joints and also high in calories.
“Cashew fruits are also rich in many essential vitamins that help to maintain healthy gums, teeth and numerous health promoting phytochemicals that protect one from diseases and cancers,” she said.
Ms. Abdul said that cashew fruits provided anti-oxidant and protective ultra-violet ray filtering functions that helped to prevent age-related macular degeneration in the elderly. She noted that eating cashew nuts could help the body to utilise iron, develop bones, produce skin with hair pigment and eliminate free radicals.
She also said that the consumption of cashew fruits could be helpful in the management of sore throats and strengthen immune systems.
Abdul said that cashew nuts were nourishing snacks with no cholesterol, but contained high fiber that were ideal for body building for weight-watch when eaten in moderation.
She, however, advised that cashew fruits and nuts should be eaten moderately to enhance its effectiveness in strengthening the immune system for healthy life.

Tonto Dikeh risks jail term for posting weed photos on Instagram?

For posting the marijuana photos on her instagram page, a representative of The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is saying actress Tonto Dikeh faces jail term.

NDLEA spokesman Mr. Mitchell Ofoyejus told Punch
“Our attention has been drawn to the post quite frankly and I can tell you that action will be taken on it. The law is clear and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria. The weed is one of the banned narcotics in the country.
“NDLEA Act Section 14 (b) states that any person who conspires with, aids, abets, counsels, attempts to commit or is an accessory to any act or offence referred to in this act shall be guilty of an offence under this act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.
So if you get 15 years for posting a weed photo on social media, what do you now get for selling and distributing? And what about those who sing about it? I don't get! Continue...

“Investigation has not started as of now but definitely, a step has to be taken on the matter. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse; so, it is obvious that the actress stands the risk of 15 years jail term. The appropriate department is meeting on the issue for necessary action.”
The NDLEA spokesman, however, declined to give any hint on particular steps the agency would take in its investigation, citing reasons bearing on ethics.

FG To Impose £20,000 Visa-Bond On UK Visitors

indications emerged yesterday that Nigeria would impose a £20,000 visa bond on UK visitors if a planned £3000 bond on Nigeria pushes through

Minister of Foreign Affairs Olugbenga Ashiru said yesterday that the Federal Government will defend the interest of Nigerians on consular related issues with foreign countries.

Ashiru spoke in Abuja following a proposal by the United Kingdom to introduce a bond of 3,000 pounds (N750, 000) for intending visitors from Nigeria and five other countries.

Speaking at the 2013 Ministerial Platform, Ashiru reiterated that the UK government was yet to officially notify Nigeria on the proposal scheduled to start inNovember.

“Really, we have received no official communication from theUK government.

“When we receive communication from them, we will study whatever proposal they are trying to do but I canassure all Nigerians that President Jonathan’s government will defend the interest of Nigerians by whatever means it can.’’

The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs committee kicked against the policy. Chair of theDiaspora Committee Abike Dabiri –Erewa asked Nigeria to adopt the principle of reciprocity if the UK insists onthe visa bond from Nigerians traveling to Britain. She suggested a N5million bond for any Briton seeking Nigerian visa as a visitor.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee onForeign Affairs, Ms. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje described the visa bond as discriminatory and unacceptable. She said the House of Representativeswould take a critical look at the policy as it affects Nigerians and come up with a way forward. Dabiri-Erewa said: “Nigeria should adopt the principle of reciprocity. If they ask us to pay £3,000, lettheir citizens also pay N5million visa bond.

“This is a discriminatory policy and it is unacceptable. Do not forget that we are a member of the Commonwealth, what are we going to enjoy if they could impose such a discriminatory policy?

“I am quite sure that France will not impose visa bond on their former colonies. The UK Government should reverse itor else we should pay them back in equal measure.

“The Federal Government should not allow the situation to lie low; it should reject it and make it reciprocal.

“When South Africa said we should be paying N100, 000 visa bond and we reciprocated, it quickly stopped the policy.

“If Nigerian and Indian doctors withdraw their services in the UK, their health sector will collapse.
Elendu-Ukeje described the new UK visa bond as discriminatory and unacceptable.

In a statement in Abuja, the lawmaker said such policy wasnot in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.
She said: “This is totally discriminatory and unacceptable. It is target to non-white Commonwealth.

“They should realise that it isnot in the best interest of UK. We will as a country, going to look at it vis-a- vis our citizens and come up with a decision.

“We agree totally with our Foreign Minister that the policy is totally unworkable and impractical’’.

“It is contrary to the commitment made to our President by Prime Minister David Cameron during their last meeting. We believe it is for political reason ahead of general elections.

“We seek that our long historical relationship should take precedence over politicalexpediency.”
The minister admitted that thebiggest challenge facing the present administration’s foreign policy thrust was the welfare of Nigerians abroad.

He said Nigeria missions abroad had been directed to pay utmost attention to the needs of Nigerians abroad, particularly the plight of Nigerians in various prisons abroad.
He acknowledged that many Nigerians were stranded abroad in prisons and that the affected Nigerians had continued to suffer various forms of discriminations in their host countries.

According to the minister, over 9000 Nigerians are currently serving prisons terms abroad, with the largestnumber of 752 in the UK.

“Most of the remaining prisoners are concentrated inthe Asia – Pacific region and agood number of them are on death row.

“We are concluding Prisoners’ Transfer Agreement (PTA) with all thosecountries, such as United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, China, Indonesia, Switzerland,South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and Hong Kong, so that we can bring home these Nigerians to complete their prison terms.

“I wish to seize this opportunity to appeal to members of different groups; the media, civil societies, religious groups, traditional rulers, etc, to join hands in the education of our youths inan enlightenment campaign against trafficking in drugs, inparticular, and other social vices in general. “This assignment should not be left alone to Governments at different levels to handle.’’
On the much-talked about reopening of Information Centres abroad, the minister appealed to the Federal Ministry of Information to ensure proper funding for the centres.

Another Sex In Big Brother Africa: Selly Gives It To Nando [PLUS VIDEOS]

Ghanaian rep in the Big Brother Africa house, Selly, has finally succumbed to Nando's demands of wanting to have sèx with her. Nando is clearly a persuasive guy and the chemistry between the two is apparent.

Nando spent a better part of the evening whispering sweet stuffs in Selly's ear...
On Sunday night, Selly blushed when Nando decided to add a little colour to her life. While everyone in the House struggled to come to terms with Motamma and Betty's Evictions, Nando was on a sèx mission.

As he and Selly sat on the couch, Nando decided to fetch a blanket to ensure he and his lady love get a bit of privacy. With only their heads peeking out of the blanket, Nando turned on the charm and told Selly just how much he wants her. "I want to smash it every day. I want to make love to you in every way. Let's go upstairs", he whispered, as Selly bit her thumb and played with her hair.

Selly didn't make any attempts to stop the raunchy word play and seemed to be enjoying every moment of it immensely. "I can make you cry", she purred back as Nando smiled mischievously. When Nando let her know that he's been around, has had the very best and can drive her crazy, Selly craftily steered the conversation back to when they started developing feelings for one another.

Here are the two uncut videos, with one showing Nando busily at work:

Gift Ideas for Your Man : For many women finding the right gift for their man during special celebrations like Christmas

For many women finding the right gift for their man during special celebrations like Christmas, birthdays or anniversaries can be a very tough challenge. Men can be tough when it comes to choosing a gift and it’s a little bit too easy to go down the traditional route of socks, aftershave or a tie. It can be daunting choosing the right gift for your man as you want it to be something that he likes and more often than not, the selection is narrow. The same question pops into our minds over and over again: "what could he possibly want?" It is also common to find that the gifts you like the most are either too expensive or something that will not be used. It's important to underline the fact that he's probably not going to care how much it cost you, he'll be thrilled knowing that the gift you gave him was perfect for him and that's something he'll never forget. First think of things he's mentioned in some occasions that he could use, like for example a helmet for his motorcycle, a new pair of weights to workout from home, or some great movie you saw together some time ago. Depending on the gift, you can afford to buy it bran new, but if for example you think your boyfriend would enjoy a new bicycle, you can maybe check your local free-classifieds website and see if someone is selling one in very good condition at a lesser price. But moving down to business, here we can take a look at some gift ideas that he would least expect.

Gadgets
If your man is into gadgets, then this is your lucky day. There are a huge range of affordable gadgets to choose from that will come in useful. If he is into music, a great idea would be to buy him a new pair of headphones or an MP3 player. Nowadays, iPhones and iPads are very popular, so if your man already owns one of these devices, why not have a look at some cool gadgets to compliment them, such as protective screen covers that come in a range of designs, or if your man is into taking photos, there is a great clip on camera lens device that works great with Instagram. If your man is a smoker, electronic cigarettes can be a great gift choice too since it is even good for his health. Needless to say he could maybe use a blackberry to keep in contact with you and his loved ones, but if you cannot afford a new one you can always check out second hand blackberries online.

Gift Cards
